You used to love running. Or the gym. Or jumping on the trampoline with your kids. Then something shifted, and now every time you pick up the pace, laugh too hard, or sneeze at the wrong moment, you’re rushing to the bathroom or hoping no one notices.
Bladder leakage affects around one in three Australian women. Most of them don’t talk about it. A lot of them quietly stop exercising because of it.
That’s a problem. Because the very thing they’re avoiding, targeted and progressive exercise, is one of the most effective treatments for stress urinary incontinence.
Why Does This Happen?
Stress urinary incontinence (the kind that happens when you cough, sneeze, run, or jump) is caused by weakness or dysfunction in the pelvic floor muscles. Pregnancy, birth, hormonal changes, and years of high-impact activity without proper support can all contribute.
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles, just like your glutes or your shoulders. And like any muscle group, it can be trained.
The challenge is that most women either don’t know how to train it correctly, are doing the wrong exercises for their specific situation, or are avoiding all exercise out of fear. That avoidance leads to deconditioning, which makes the problem worse.
What Our Pelvic Floor Program Does Differently
Our pelvic floor and women’s health exercise program is a structured exercise physiology pathway designed specifically for women experiencing pelvic floor dysfunction, bladder leakage, and related musculoskeletal issues.
It goes beyond basic Kegel exercises. Your Accredited Exercise Physiologist will assess your full movement picture, including strength, posture, breathing mechanics, and load management, then build a program that addresses the root cause, not just the symptom.
The goal isn’t just to stop the leaking. It’s to get you back to the exercise and activities you’ve been avoiding, with the confidence that your body can handle them.
You Don’t Have to Live With This
Bladder leakage is common. It is not inevitable, and it is not something you simply have to manage for the rest of your life. Many women see significant improvement within weeks of starting a targeted exercise program, particularly when exercise physiology is paired with input from a women’s health physiotherapist, which is something we can coordinate within the Proactive Health team.
You deserve to run without thinking about it. To sneeze without crossing your legs. To exercise without spending the whole time anxious about what might happen.
That’s what Proactive Health is here for.
